  • Re: Homeless solutions

Maybe he got laid off and couldn't get a job because of his age (he was 54 years old), ran out of unemployment benefits and became homeless. And then he couldn't get a job because he was homeless. Vicious cycle.

Yeah, maybe. I agree that the cycle of homelessness can be very hard to break.

But isn't it likely that a healthy person could get a job in their 50's doing at least something that would bring in enough money to not need to live under a bridge? Fast food restaurant, cashier, etc, which are all honest jobs for hard working people who want to work. Which brings around my original question of if "choice" comes into play for some homeless who remain so for years and years?

it's both a simple and complicated topic / answer, full time basic labor jobs that pay decent enuf to live normal in Hawaii are scarce, those who are mentally stable and haven't experienced homelessness (or bounced back from it) likely did so by busting their ass in the rat race and sacrificing enjoyments of life just to barely keep off the streets. obviously, not everybody succeeded due to you name it, many indeed finally threw in the towel and 'chose' to live on the streets, and once you're in the homeless spiral you're no longer a healthy person, very few can do homelessness well enuf to avoid the pitfalls, sleep deprivation alone is devastating and if zoning out to the scenery from a cardboard mansion is all they got left then I can't really blame them. the overall answer is free doghouse homes and full basic assistance for all willing to accept positive change in re-starter communities around any afflicted area.

In my opinion (whatever that is worth) the real solution to the homeless problem is to build more houses. The real-estate market is one of the few remaining supply and demand markets.
Not long ago the newspaper published an article that said the island was 20,000 housing units short of what we need. That is apparent in the number of two and three generations in single family homes and the high price of houses. When the supply meets or exceeds the demand, the price will come down.
But there are many that oppose building houses because they want to save the lands. Sacred, or agricultural they want to save them, but they do not seem to see the cost of that. The cost is the large homeless population.
I too wish that he island could be like it was in the early 1960’s but that would require the population to return to what it was in the early 1960’s. And that is another can of worms.

One approach to getting additional homes built (especially of the "smaller-and-lower-construction-cost = lower-rent" type of house) would be to lessen the restrictions on building ohana houses. Matter of fact, how about passing a state law that prohibits HOAs from banning ohana housing with that development. If more homeowners were allowed to build an additional smaller home (AKA ohana home), there would many more cheaper places for others to rent.

I agree that ohana housing will help relieve the pressure on the housing market, but I don’t think it will be a solution by itself. More homes, individual houses or high rise apartments are needed.

                • Re: Homeless solutions

to me it's simple, also long run cost effective, and rebuilds lives to use (new growth industry) converted shipping containers which can be stacked and welded / connected together to form apts. and communities around each island for free monitored habitation with sewers / power / internet, then allow any and all who wish to live in such truncated and monitored surroundings to sign up. this will give struggling renters a viable option to opt out of the losing fight towards building capital and credit, plus provide for all the homeless to become viable or at least safe ...and out of sight as so many desire, and with the housing demand relieved maybe it'll introduce some friggin sense into all the overpricing by the greedy and force legislation to help upper middle class buyers / owners and free up land as we transition.
there's plenty other considerations but this is the basic start and the rest will be worked out easier once the monster is pacified.

you just gotta laff at the circular logic our officials go to in blaming the victims. this is what you get when you create a monster.
“They are incorrigible,” says State Parks administrator Curt Cottrell of the campers. “They are urban nomads. Short of sending armed guards up the side of the crater every night, we cannot stop the homeless from coming back. No amount of fencing would work. They would cut holes in the fences to climb through. These people like camping. They want to be by themselves. They are service-resistant.” Cottrell says what rankles him most are the piles of garbage left behind. “It is like they are trying to be as messy as possible. The amount of human waste at the camps really bothers me. They are disrespectful to the aina.”
