Just to confirm your story, I checked snopes.com, and its true.

But I just noticed that we don't have one corded phone in the house. If there's an power outage, then there's seven phoens amongst us (plus my collection of cell phones incase one breaks )
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

Cell phone users I don't think you have to worry about this one...

Um, don't forget about your computers! If you don't have a surge protector or UPS to filter the electricity, you could also get zapped during an electrical storm (same reason why you could get zapped using a landline phone during an electrical storm).

Errr. Yes, if you use a non-corded phone then lightning can't travel up the wire to zap you.

But you do know that if the power goes out, then all those cordless phones won't work, because their base station is powered from your house current? And your cell phones too; if the power to the neighborhood cell phone towers fails, then it doesn't matter that your cell phone battery has a full charge; the signal won't be picked up and sent through the network if the towers aren't operational.

Traditional corded landline phones, on the other hand, are powered entirely by the current in the phone line that carries the signal. So if the phone company's network is up, then your phone will still work. And in power outages, the phones do usually still work, traffic issues caused by everybody trying to call their friends and family at once during a crisis notwithstanding.

That's why even though I love cordless phones, I still keep one corded phone plugged into the wall in my house. Just in case.

Regarding the original issue of getting zapped by lightning while using a phone, I always had the impression that this was less of a problem here in the islands, due to the much lower incidence of lightning strikes compared to in North America. I have never heard of lightning hitting something on the ground in Hawai'i.

A month or 2 ago there was a news report of lightning hitting a house. Came through the roof, down a structural wall and damaged the tile where it "entered" the ground. A few weeks ago, another news report of lightning hitting a hollow tile wall in front of another house. Cracked and collapsed. There were local televised news so there were pictures. It is happening and probably going to get more frequent as the weather patterns start to get stranger.

Well, I stand corrected. But it's still pretty uncommon, at least compared to the lightning strikes that I hear about from America.

Don't know whether this marine or this tree counts. They were both on the ground!

Glen, you be right. The lightning storms we have here is definitely nothing compared to what they get on the mainland. Florida is one of the worst states for lightning and I've been "lucky" to see some amazing sights. I've only seen maybe one or two of the type of lightning, here, that's the norm up there. Tropical storms coming off the Atlantic on the Outer Banks of NC are an awesome sight. Our recent "Kona low" storms can't compare. I've seen "rings of fire" in TX. Clear sky directly above and a 360 degree circle of lightning storms around.

We have "convective" storm clouds. Once you've seen "real" anvil clouds building over the plains of TX, AZ or NM, there's nothing to compare here. Darned thangs look like there are atomic bombs exploding within. Cloud build up takes only seconds compared to hours over here.

Even my brother said that there isn't any weather feature here that will scare him more than living through a tornado in OK...and his experiece was only a "close call".

Having seen worse weather conditions firsthand really puts things in perspective, not to say our local flooding is nothing and I do have concerns for our neighbors who've been affected. For them it's been a nightmare, but for the most part it's still..."lucky you live Hawai'i". The only storm that I get really concerned about, as in personal and family safety, is a hurricane.

Desert thunderstorms are awesome too; I once spent about ten minutes on the side of the road in New Mexico trying to get a decent photo of the amazing lightning show I was seeing. I did make sure I was about 50 feet from the car, I think. Or maybe not; maybe I was bracing my elbows on its roof. Oops.

Buzz1941's house in Kailua was hit during a storm last year. Did quite a bit of damage. Fried all the electronics in the house, burned a bedroom wall and carpet and blew a plastic outlet cover to pieces, IIRC.

NOAA says that from 1959-1994, Hawai'i has had zero deaths from lightning strikes. Compare that with the top six -- New Mexico, Wyoming, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, and Colorado -- which have had at least one death per million people per year during that period. There are also figures on lightning-related injuries and property damage. Hawai'i is consistently at the bottom of the list on every measure.
