WAAAY beyond a v/o sponsor billboard, even beyond an advertiser's logo on a sports-score or weather graphic ...

"LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - While just about every television genre has jumped on the lucrative product-placement bandwagon, news programs generally have been considered off-limits to preserve editorial integrity."

Yikes. It's bad enough that ad space appears on newspapers' front pages nowadays.

I also remember, in the 1980s, being horrified during a radio newscast (on another station) that during a spot break, the newscaster gave her own (recorded) testimonial about her weight-loss experience with the 'cast's sponsor. Then it was back to the newscast.

I know a lot less than what there is to be known.

"YIKES" indeed! Thanks for the link, Erika.
I can see -- perhaps -- doing it on the morning shows, but absolutely not during hard news shows, disclaimer or not.
Gotta love the spin those broadcasters use in calling it product integration instead of product placement.

Interesting article. I wonder how much influence DVRs, and the ability to eliminate commercials, is having on the decision to go the product placement/intergration route?

            From the article:
Univision's KMEX has an integration partnership with health-care provider Kaiser Permanente Southern California as part of what the station calls its "Lead a healthy life, get the facts" public-service campaign. Kaiser physicians are interviewed on myriad health topics on Univision's various news programs, news footage is shot at Kaiser facilities, and Kaiser patients and support groups are featured in news segments. As part of the arrangement, Kaiser pays additional fees for the integrations, which are not disclosed as such during the news programs.
I wish somebody would ask KITV if they have the same sort of deal. During Dick Allgire's Health Reports there's often a Kaiser doctor interviewed about some condition or another. Not so much when there's a new surgical option Dick reports on (which typically is only practiced by one doctor in Boston or NY or Baltimore), but when he's talking about common everyday stuff (like diet), you'll frequently see a Kaiser nutritionist talking.

Oh, and then you'll see the Kaiser "Thrive" commercial during the same news program.

Just a curiosity question on my part. How does KITV's Kaiser doctor interviews differ from KHON's Dr. Kalani Brady segments during the morning show? Or, is night vs morning the difference? I know Dr. Brady is (or at least has been) affiliated with Straub but, to be honest, I can't recall if Straub's name is mentioned. <brain burp!> And, I've not seen Allgire's reports in a long time. So, I guess my question is coming from not only a place of curiosity but also a place of ignorance!

Re: Troubling development in TV News

We've touched on the Kaiser-KITV connection before. Kaiser is a major sponsor, and a frequent source for health stories. Our tvguy said it's just a coincidence, but I'm not so sure. Yeah, there aren't exactly a thousand major health care providers in Hawaii, but I can't remember the last time I've seen an HMSA person used as a source where HMSA wasn't part of the story.

I also can't help but notice the prominent Down To Earth logo on the fridge in Dick Allgire's cutesy "cooking healthy" bits.

Speaking of Dick Allgire, I still don't know where he gets his cut-and-paste "current health news" segments from... a communal ready-to-use pool from Hearst-Argyle? Or some group with an agenda? They're almost always about "new" treatments not yet proven or available, or "alternative" medicine.

I believe Kalani left Straub well over a year ago and is now working for the University of Hawaii. He also does weekly trips to Molokai, as I recall.

The only reason I watch those segments is because I get such a kick out of Auntie Ruby!

Trust me, there are plenty of daily medical newsletters, some of which have video clips attached. I'd imagine he's a subscriber to quite a few.

Is Auntie Ruby still doing those segments? If so, did she not appear for awhile? I remember not seeing her and thinking I hope it's a budget cut vs a health issue. She's such a cutie.

                        (Ditto on the thread drift!)

She sure is! Saw her just last night on one segment.
And no "product integration" that I could see, either. (What thread drift? )

I believe Kaiser "cans" those health segments for KITV, it's a deal they've had with the station for years. It is known as a Video News Release or what Tv guys call VNR. Kaiser does the interviews, comes up with the story ideas and Allgire just cuts and pastes his voice on there. He openly admits he's lazy.
Personally I like the other health reporter who just left KGMB for KHNL. Isn't she a nurse or something close to it? Much more interesting than Allgire, and much better to look at!

Oh and speaking of product placement! How about Diane Ako' does it work segment? I saw the "As Seen on TV" air a commercial after their Does it Work report. Coincidence? Or product placement?
