Loco Moco, although I have to admit I've gotten very bored with the inevitable scoop of mac salad so don't eat there as much as I used to.

Must be the Kailua L&L is good? Never been there.

Been to too many other L&Ls, though, and they way overcook their chicken for katsu, serve 2 scoops of mushy rice and a scoop of tasteless mac salad. Just salty cardboard already. If we do eat at L&L it's at the ones that have the Chopstick Express, and that's not often. Used to like going to the Wahiawa L&L for their huge servings of decent food at least once a week. Their katsu/teri mix was pretty good. They changed cook or something and now you get huge servings of lousy food. I have never been to a really good one like some say they've been too and don't doubt, but at this point I think L&L is overrated and I've been to too many bad one's to bother trying them again. The only thing they got going is they still serve a lot of food. IMO, since we're critiqueing L&L.

If L&L were the last drive in on the island or I lived on the mainland and one opened up, I might think differently. But they're not and I ain't.

I'm too old to eat that much anyway so I take the time to find better quality eats.

I've noticed that there are wild variations in taste between the different L&Ls around the island. One would think they'd be stricter in the quality standards across the board. But then again, the food isn't very good in the first place. Never did understand the popularity of the place...

I think it's a franchise and guessing that each hires their own cooks. Only the menu is standard. Tell 20 of their cooks to make BBQ chicken and you'll get 20 variations. Funny how all of them can make mac salad that is equally tasteless and mushy rice.

I live in walking distance to 2 L&L locations but I normally prefer going to a former L&L location only because their prices are lower.

*Sob* This IS the case in my situation. Stuck on the mainland and only local kine place close and not a huge drive is L&L (unless you count my Mom's house ). I pretty much stick with the loco moco or katsu there, pretty good at the one by me. I make better loco moco at home though. My only complaint about the L&L by me is they don't carry the chili plate! None of the mainland locations do.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

I don't dislike L&L, and would probably go there if invited or with a friend, but I gotta admit, it has been a long time since I've eaten there, and there has almost always been an L&L nearby. I know if I was stuck in Kansas I'd probably crave one of their plate lunches, but living here... I just haven't been in the mood. I'm not a discerning enough diner to judge good variations on a popular dish, it's just that overall, in my mind, L&L equals very heavy, very rich, strongly flavored food. Despite not being as health conscious as I should be, I'm cautious enough to avoid what some call a "heart attack on a plate."

Have you seen the "low carb combo"? A heap of meat capped with eggs. My gods.

When I was an L&L regular, though, I tended to go with their lemon chicken, loco moco, chicken katsu, or chicken katsu curry. I guess their katsu wasn't exactly great, but it was among the more consistent dishes across locations, I thought.

do NOT go to the one in old ewa. probably the worst one i have ever eaten at. however, the kaimuki, kahala, and kapahulu ones are pretty good. i like the bbq burger, mahimahi, and the hamburger steak.

Sorry Waiz, it's not that I hate mac salad or L&L (speaking for myself). It's just that I find the mac salads and food at L&Ls a bit lacking nowdays. You probably weren't around when they first opened. The food was darned good back then, at the L&Ls that I went to. If we were talking about Zippy's, there would be another group of nay sayers to Zippy's mac salad and food. Me for one. I'm a really picky old fart. No worry bruddah.

Yeah, like around 10 years ago when I lived on Ohai St. in Wahiawa, I used to go to the then-new L&L there every Friday for their broke da mout' beef broccoli with fried noodles and oyster sauce. They didn't have to ask. They'd start cooking it up for me as soon as they saw me walk in the door.

Sad to read that the food's not so good there any more.

Might be a good time to revive our old mac salad discussion thread. In addition to where the best mac salad can be had, I think it'd be great to get into what y'all think should, and shouldn't, be in mac salad. It's a debate that rages even within families!
