  • Honolulu Advertiser Changes are Near

"Easier, to Hold, Fold and Read"...

According to the Advertising Director of the Honolulu Advertiser, changes will soon be underway for Hawaii's largest news print circulation.

Most notable will be their move from the Kapiolani Blvd. facility to their new multi-million dollar press in Kapolei. This transition is to take place some time between June and August.

When they are fully operational at the Kapolei press, the paper format will change to the current industry standard, which Star Bulletin is already using.

The current Advertiser display page is 13" width x 21.5" depth (height). The new standard will be 11.50" width x 20" depth (height). In comparison, the Star Bulletin's current display page is 13" width x 21.5" depth (height).

So The Advertiser's new format will be slightly shorter and narrower than folks are used to. This also makes it about 1-1/2" shorter than the Star Bulletin. Never-the-less, expect to see much improved offset capabilities and more expansive use of color pages than before. Their new press will also have the ability to run up to 70,000 papers/hour.

Honolulu Advertiser boasts a current market circulation of 342,310 daily readers and 440,485 Sunday readers.

From a Desktop Publisher's persective, this "industry standard" that Star Bulletin and Advertiser will adhere to will make formatting for the competing service bureaus that much EASIER. That's always a good thing!

Looking forward to the new format. I'm glad that both newpapers have on-line reading. I don't always have time to pickup the paper but am able to read on-line.

I like the Star-Bulletin's dimensions, and think the Advertiser will do just fine, but I have to admit, I enjoyed the "old fashioned" feeling of the bigger broadsheet size... there's just something great about leaning back in your chair, and holding that thing open in front of you.

The smaller size works for the Bulletin, since it's generally a thinner paper. I wonder what a Sunday Advertiser will look like, though. If it's narrower and shorter, it'll be even harder to handle if it's a hundred pages thick (plus glossy inserts and who knows what else).

I think the biggest practical change will be having to use more sheets to wrap and pad something to ship it!

A new press will not be the panacea to the 'Tizer's problems. Sure, the paper might be spiffy looking, but will the product itself be any better? The phrase 'smoke and mirrors' comes to mind. And, this press will have to be paid for. I wonder who's going to foot the bill?

Shoots. I should've bought one. Finished my book with my morning coffee so bought a newspaper to have something to read until Cheapo's opens. But I bought the Star-Bulletin.

Given the choice, I take the Star-Bulletin too, but in many places, all you've got is the Honolulu Advertiser.

I was able to see the new design today. Subtle shifts in things, but noticable still. I think a lot of the fonts changed, to slighly lighter weights (both for serifs and sans-serifs). They also tweaked the masthead, pulling the "Aloha!" and giving the web URL more prominent placement.

Of course, since they're printing their narrower design on the old broadsheet paper, it looks a little funny, with over an inch of whitespace surrounding the page. But when they change presses, it'll be a better fit.

Their special feature on the redesign and the new press can be found here.

I hadn't noticed this thread until today, but here's what I wrote yesterday when I got my first copy of the new version.

I don't care what the Advertiser does- I still won't buy Gannett. I buy the S-B every AM on the way home.

From what I understand (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that the 'Tizer switched to the new design in the dimentions of the new paper they'll be using, but are printing it on the old sized paper. It looks completely bizarre. There was some mumbo jumbo of them needing time to slowly switch over to the new press, and will do so sectionally in the coming months (which will add to the strangeness when there are two different page sizes in one paper). Of course, grandfathering it all in is a fool-proof way of doing things. But then again, the first edition of the post-JOA Bulletin was done without any of that. One shot, and we pulled it off. No test runs.

I favor the Star-Bulletin but think the Advertiser has good features (the 'Ohana page) the other paper should offer.

Yep the funnies are in COLOR!!! I just hope the print gets larger for my failing eyes and they cut their pages so it's easier to flip thru the pages.

One suggestion is that they put the Page One continuation on the backside of each section to make reading each story easier when you only have one hand to read while holding your coffee with the other like on the bus.

Offering daily comics in color is another reason why I prefer the Bulletin. Also that it has Zits, which is posted online only after several days, whereas most of the Advertiser's comics (e.g., Luann), are online the same day.

Was it just my copy, or did one of the recent weekend feature inserts (TGIF) have mixed paper grades? That is, the cover/wrapper and one or two inside pages (likely one signature) was printed on higher-grade, extra white paper, while the rest of the insert used the standard newsprint.

I know they want to make a painstaking, gradual transition to their new presses... but that looked pretty silly.

they're playing with you man! Nah I noticed that too, couldn't figure that one out either. Maybe they're trying to run out the old paper stock.
