From the "How to lose your gig at a network O&O" Department:

WCBS-TV New York Reporter Fired Over F-Word

As reported by the New York Post, WCBS-TV, Channel 2 New York reporter Arthur Chi'en was fired yesterday after he used the f-word on-air during a 6 a.m. broadcast.

Chi'en was doing a live report in front of a subway station when two men walked up behind him, began chanting, "Opie & Anthony,” held up a sign and gave the finger to the camera.

Chi'en kept talking, but as soon as he finished his report, he spun around and shouted at the intruders: "What the f--- is your problem, man?" The expletive went out over the air and now Chi’en is out of a job.

Reporters...eh, he should have kept his composure. Make sure the camera was turned off completely, put down his microphone and tell them, "wat, you want a piece of me?"...then kung fu the SOB's!

By the way, they should have fired the camera guy/girl too!

Hmmm... the guy ought to come to Hawaii, where you can get fired for physically smacking around your co-worker and still get another gig right away at a different station, like Robert Kekaula did.

        For real.

I always wanted to reach into my tv to grab those people who make fools of themselves behind a reporter. The best ones are like when watching UH basketball and Jim and Artie are doing a commentary at halftime... there's always the same people on their cellphone calling home or whatever telling everyone they're on the tv now lol...

If you recall, Erika reported a while back on one of our own's unexpected verbal ejaculation. I've now got that clip saved for posterity, along with Angela Keen's driving blooper from several years ago.

Sadly, I have been advised that distribution of said material would be ill advised...

As for folks clamoring for attention? Witness the network morning shows and their studio windows designed to encourage such ridiculousness.

At least rowdy, camera-mugging sports fans have some practice, and when they want to be obnoxious, they can do it well. Compare that to the sporadic opportunities political campaign workers get to practice... seeing them scatter and make 'A' in the background as a TV reporter covers stuff at someone's campaign headquarters is always a little painful.

as a new abstractor, the most fun i have at work is seeing reporters and anchors lose their cool on live television...it is sometimes painful to watch, like peter platelunch mugging behind a reporter at a political rally as pz described...but if i'm not laughing out of my seat at the bumbling news guy/gal, i'm wincing with a stomach-turning discomfort at a botched report...those moments prove that 90% of the reporters and anchors out there have absolutely no business being in front of the camera as a broadcast journalist...
              Don't be mean,
              try to help.

You have to remember that Hawaii is a small market and basically a training ground for kids just out of college or people from even smaller markets on the mainland. The ones who prove themselves and do well here move on to bigger and better paydays on the mainland......The ones who reach their peak in both ability and pay usually end up doing P.R. work...........

                  Re: Word to the wise

I used to see people from the mainland come to Hawaii because radio in some of the larger markets are harder to aspire.

It's the Small Fish in the Big Pond on the mainland then suddenly when they move to Hawaii they become the Big Fish in the Small Pond. This is typical if you worked as a board operator/producer for some of the big stations like KFI in L.A. or WABC up east and came to Hawaii with those references under your belt and applied for a job here.

Were you trying to search for this story on the advertiser?

Wouldn't matter what kind of search engine they have since there wasn't a web site until 1999.

We always tend to be conflicted about this, don't we? One might think the person should have been more careful. But we've all known good people whose careers were set back by the gaffe of a few moments. And a good person who is retained after such a gaffe may be an even better person... more careful.

Okay, you can't mention that you have these clips and NOT tell us how we can get our own copies of it too

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Guy Hagi yet. I heard he had said the f-word after thinking the live camera had finished rolling. That verbal "boob slip" cost his job at KHNL. Soon after, he was hired at KGMB where he still resides.
