    Supermarket trolleys

These have become a source of infection. People sneeze, wipe their noses and mouthes and continue to push their trolleys.
'Tip' - Get a pack of detol or any antisceptic wipes. Give the handles of these trolleys a good wipe before you use them.

Grocery stores in my area keep a canister of antiseptic wipes on hand right next to the trolleys/carts now.

Grocery carts as a source of germs is a well known issue and is the primary reason I keep Purell in my car.

Three cheers for Purell! We always keep a small squeeze bottle on our person. However, the following quote from Cyn in the Swine flu thread has me rethinking my strategy a bit. Cyn gives good advice!

        2. whenever you touch things that other people have touched (doorknobs, office equipment, atm machines, shopping carts, what have you) re-sanitize your hands by doing #1 above.

Even before the H1N1 scare, I was already using shopping cart handle covers. From what I understand, the lady who invented the covers made quite a bit of money. I started using them years ago when I saw this kid actually biting a cart handle. Ewwwww!!!

We don't know about Purell here but I'm certain that we are all on the right lines. I keep a packet of detol wipes in my shoulder bag to wipe such things,,,,, door knockers etc. Call me crazy ? Call me what you like but don't call me early in the morning.

Yes, we are. Dettol makes a hand-sanitizer gel, too. Purell was the first brand to get the product out all over the U.S. (there are many others available now).

I understand about the whole gross factor, and wanting to be safe from germs and all that, but am I the only person who thinks America (at least) has become overzealous about sanitation? I grew up in a household that was very lax about germs. We ate dirt, shared spoons. The only time we really washed our hands were after using the restroom and before meals. And for the most part we didn't get sick. It's the whole idea that constant exposure to low levels of germs makes you immune to them.

But heck, I ride the bus. That's pretty much like going in front of the germ firing squad every day.

LOL, Sophielynette! Or working at a day care. Yikes! Every mother of elementary school kids knows her children will bring home everyone eles's cooties, no matter if we wash our hands or use trolley condoms.

I ate mudpies, shared licks on ice creams, heck, we even took baths with neighbor kids... yeah, all that grosses me out now, but I have a great immune system now. Even kicked cancer's butt.

I'm surprised that people don't wear gloves out in public. A guy might look suspicious when he doesn't want to leave fingerprints.

I work at an STD clinic. I've found it easier to just not think about things

But I'm very glad for you that you kicked cancer's butt!

i completely agree with you, SL. i just up the use of alcohol gels etc when it's cold and flu season...esp when others around me are sick.
