  • But, but, it's NOT AUGUST YET! TG, NOOO!

Nooo! My husband's contract got canceled! We were supposed to be here for a year and now we have to leave at the end of January. Two months ago, I would have been so happy about this, but now we're both so bummed. We both just sort of mope around. All of our new friends, our house, the beach, TG totally can't fit in my suitcase.

We haven't gotten to do half the stuff we wanted to do while we were here. I have 30 days and don't want to spend a whole, whole lot of $$ because I know it's going to be expensive shipping all our crap home. So if you only had 30 days to cram in stuff, what would you do?

We've been to Sea Life Park, snorkling at Hanauma Bay, driven all over the island, been to a kabillion beaches, Lizard Rock, Pali Lookout, Halona Blow Hole, went to Dole, visited Pearl Harbor, and got dragged to Waikiki when some visitors came to town. Can't afford to island-hop, so I have to cross that off my list. We had to cancel our anniversary trip to the Big Island. I'm not interested in any other super-touristy stuff. Ooh, and I'm going to learn how to surf. What else??

Can't think of anything creative this time

Have you tried hiking Diamond Head? That should take up around 2-3 hours to do.

Can I suggest that you get a bus to Magic Island and then walk from there to the International market. Have a bite to eat and then carry on your walk to Diamond Head. If you have any money left You can always stay in the Marriott on the way back.
I think it was about $60 to go outer isle when I was there but there is no transport and you would need to hire a car. Anyway, I think Aloha airlines have now gone out of business, owing to the airline price wars.?

This list might help with the brainstorming:
          http://www.101thingstodo.com/hawaii/oahu/index.php

As for the surfing: are you sure that you want to risk beginning an activity that you may find hugely enjoyable and that could consume several hours/day of your life... and then move to a place without surf? Or even worse, a place with cold surf?

For various "oblivious" and "too busy" reasons I didn't learn to surf until I was retired, and now I'm pretty sure that if I'd learned earlier then I would've struggled to maintain any kind of work/surf balance. One of my friends comes here from northern CA (as in, "nearly Oregon") every March and spends 3-5 hours/day surfing. He's practically crying as he enjoys himself because he knows that in a couple more weeks he's going to be covered in neoprene again.

It's still worth learning to surf. Just be aware of the potential consequences...

Yes, surfing is something I've always wanted to learn how to do. Today is my last day of work. I know I'm not coordinated enough to pick it up fast enough to spend hours doing it, so no worries there!

All right. Diamond head, check. Any other less populated, more challenging hikes?

Still can't island hop. Hubby says no.

Yeah, I wish we could stay, but there is no way this is possible. We own a house back home and due to the horrible market, we would lose money on it. Plus, there isn't anything here in my husband's line of work. We've looked.

Try the 'Pipe Line' The locals will tell you how to get there. I would never surf there again. It's for the experienced but there are parts where you would be safe. I am sure that somebody will help. There is a place nearby where you can hire boards, then get on the bus and head back home afterwards.

You could continue up that coast to where Jurrasic Park was filmed and that is well worth a wander around.
OMG ! I wish I was back there instead of this cold, snowy, frosty, foggy England. My friends there tell me that there have been troubles with rain and drainage but give me that anyday for a walk down McCulley, down along the Ala Wai to the Barefoot bar near Dukes.

Want to learn how to surf? I learned from this guy. I went from no experience to standing on a longboard comfortably in one session.

...think I'd stick with learning to surf in Waikiki during winter.

I'm one of those who was addicted to surfing when I was in jr. and sr. high school. I used to ditch school when the surf was up! My dad always wrote me an excuse note for school because he was the one I went surfing with!

You could also spend some time at Magic Island, which is across the street from the Ala Moana Shopping Center. You can either have a picnic there or watch the sunset.

I would recommend the Mariner's Ridge, Manoa Falls, Puu Pia, Kahana Valley, Aiea Heights loop, Makapuu Lighthouse (& tidepools) & Olomana hikes, swim/hike to the top of Chinaman's Hat, picnic on the Kaneohe Bay sandbar (I usually swim [with boogie board] or row out in a little inflatable) and at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden. Swim, snorkel or surf (body, boogie, board) at every beach park. Go to the four corners of the island. Now if you're a geocacher,....

You can visit Kualoa Ranch by Chinaman's Hat. You can take a horseback trip or an ATV trip back into the hills where some movies were made. (someone mentioned Jurrasic Park earlier)

You should also visit Waimea Bay and jump off the lava rock. Not sure what the water conditions are like over there, but the jump is pretty fun
