  • Gnats?

Hey guys we live here on Helemano.. are you guys also getting a lot of small black gnats in your home? They are ULTRA tiny which means the screens will not keep them out, but we seem to have a LOT of these in our home... and we find the little buggahs dead all over the place...

Is it just in our area?

Due to all the dumpsters here on the shipyard, which has a cafeteria, I can honestly say I inadvertantly eat or inhale about 20 of them a day.

In our warehouse, our best cure is our trusty shopvac.

When I was in the restaurant biz we kept fans on the salad bar, to hopefully keep the gnats away. Probably did more harm than good, but a dead gnat on a piece of lettuce or tomatoe does look rather like a crushed peppercorn, doesn't it, unless of course it's still moving.......... To get rid of them you just need to go to Mels Rent a Gecko, rent 50 of em or so, no more dead gnats all over the place,,,,,,Well, then there is the slight problem with gecko poop,,,, Can they really take a kukae, as in poop, while on the ceiling???????? Someting else to worry about,,,,, probably not......

            Re: Gnats?

You could get one of those electronic "bug zappers", just hang it from the ceiling, gnats are attracted to it, and get zapped. Three drawbacks though, it will attract moths, which don't exactly "zap", it's more of a prolonged buzzing, if you put one near your window or screen door, it actually attracts more gnats, mosquitos, etc, and it puts a bunch of geckos out of a job, and, in todays economy, who needs that????

Nah, it's all over. Invasive species, wait till the snakes, the little black Glaber ants, the Amazon parrots an all get to you...

Lucky though - the gnats are alcoholics! Get one yellowjacket trap from your local Hardware Hawaii. The top fits any pasta sauce jar, so get a small one and put an inch of white wine in it.

Once a week, it will be filled with the buggahs and you gotta refresh, clean 'em out and add more wine.

It don't get 'em all, but it keeps them under control.

              (Is this alcohol abuse?)

I got them too! Teeeeeny tiny little things. Theres a ton of the dead little dudes in my ceiling light fixture globes. Eeeek!! Great, now I gotta clean those - gross. I wish I knew of a way to keep them out, but they're smaller that the screens, and I never saw them flying around the house before, so I'm guessing that they fly right thru the screen to the lightbulbs on some sort of gnat suicide mission.

Anyone know if the yellow bug lights actually work? I tried the bug zappers, but the geckos think that it's a free buffet and get fried themselves. Makes for an ugly scene, so I unplugged it.

AFAIK, they don't kill or repel, they just don't attract them.

                      Re: Gnats?

I heard that rubbing dryer sheets on the screen keeps them from going through 'cause the bugs don't like the scent or resin or something.

I know they work for keeping gnats away from the dog when you the dog's fur down with the sheets....might be worth a test anyway.

They are hard to get rid of, I used to have a light on a timer in the back of the room but it would be filled with those pesky gnats who were attracted to the light. Kitchen table is filled with the things all the time too, not sure at times if it's pepper on my food or those gnats!
