  • Real talk: the Internet took all the fun out of Sears and JCPenny Christmas catalogs

Around October, you'd be excited for your mom to give you the catalog even if you knew you ain't getting most of the stuff you want--that $2000 robot, the car-shaped bed, castle greyskull. I remember going through the catalog and circling the pictures of all the stuff I wanted, but I'd get a gift bought in a store most of the time.

Kids these days are complacent and settle for things they see on commercials. I wish they knew how the Wish Book is > *

The Wish Book, bah humbug, what we got to check out was the regular book with 6-pairs-of-underwear and multi-sock-packs. Sears was a dicey choice for us. Much better to go hang out at the local toy store and hope for a bike or wagon.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

The feel and smell of the paper, too. I've found that the Sunday New York Times Magazine recreates those sensations.

Ahh...reminds me also of the thick catalog that Toys R Us and KMart used to insert in the Sunday paper around Christmas

Completely off topic, but the "sensations" of magazines bring up memories of the old Reader's Digest, and the "My Most Memorable Person". In 6th grade, our teacher made us read those stories. To this day I think of elementary school when those stories are referred to. Cher spoke of the long series when she gave her eulogy for Sonny. Bingo, I was back in that 6th grade classroom.

I haven't seen a Wish Book in years, I take it they are not publishing it any more? Also how does "the Internet took all the fun out" factor into this discussion when you are mentioning commercials?

Lotsa people shop at Amazon, Best Buy, etc. instead of looking in catalogs. People rely on what TV spots to see what's hot.

And hey, there are commercials online too.

You can still request the Sears Wish Book. I already did, waiting patiently for it to arrive in my box. I love catalogues!
