  • Children & Youth Day, Sunday (10/05/08)

This event is happening at the Iolani Palace / State Capitol area, from 10-3. If you see a guy walking around with a tripod, a Sony camcorder, and a Nikon DSLR, looking like a complete amateur; it's probably me

Wow, what a fun event this turned out to be. I'm glad I brought my camera!

Lots of activities for the kids. There was a surprising number of cultural performances: a Tahitian tour group complete with fire dancers, live singers, Scottish dancers, bands, Chinese dragon dancers, a last minute Salsa act, and a host of other local children dance groups.

One thing I noticed were pairs of middle school girls walking around with Sony PD-170's on tripods! Apparently Olelo partners with schools to teach kids video journalism. The well spoken Sparky Rodrigues filled me in on the details. Sparky and his staff must be doing a good job, because the girls were very responsible with the gear and professional in their interviews.

If you are worried about the girls getting mugged and having their cameras stolen, don't. There was a crap load of HPD and County Sheriff people patrolling the area. Needless to say, there were no punks there to ruin the festivities. A few excited kids got a chance to have their picture taken on a police motorcycle.

I tell you, this event had a TON of photo opportunities (I took over 1,800 shots, which I whittled down to 250 decent photos). A lot of kids doing adorable things. Colorful costumes. Lots of sunlight for your slow lenses (though watch out for overexposure and back lighting). A mini-soccer field to practice your sports shooting. The main problem is visual clutter. You'll need a large aperture to isolate your subject from the background.

My favorite picture of the day was of this little guy and his proud dad. The brave buggah navigated a rope obstacle course (Rope-A-Phobia) which was 12 feet off the ground. I know I was too chicken to try!

I hope the corporate sponsors decide to pick up this event again next year. It was a great turn out and lots of fun. Here's a Flickr slideshow of some of my photos:

My favorite local performers, Samadhi, were also there. I have a lot of pictures of them interacting with the kids. They're holding a workshop for kids 6 and up, this November.
