  • Gary and Pam to 6pm

this announement was making the rounds today - perhaps KITV trying to pre-empt any Big Announcement by KGMB?

KITV announces new anchor team for

    Island Television News at 6pm

HONOLULU (September 8, 2008)-KITV Island Television News announced today
that the 5 p.m. anchor team of Gary Sprinkle and Pamela Young will add the 6
p.m. news to their duties effective September 15th.

"With Gary and Pamela anchoring Hawaii's top rated 5 p.m. newscast, building
    a 2 rated lead-in from Judge Judy at 4:30 p.m. to a #1(7 rated) newscast at
5 p.m., it is obvious that Gary and Pamela have great appeal to Hawaii's
viewers. With changes occurring in competitive newscasts, we feel the time
is right for this logical experiment," stated Mike Rosenberg, president &
    general manager.

"Gary and Pamela have a rich tradition of excellence including multiple Emmy
and SPJ award winning stories and specials. We hope to expose their talents
to a new audience at 6 p.m.," stated Tod Pritchard, news director of KITV
    Island Television News.

Island Television News at 10 will continue to be anchored by Paula Akana and
    Shawn Ching.

hmm.. I wonder how Paula and Shawn feel about that, especially anchoring only one newscast. It feels like it's a demotion for them. I guess they'll have to do field reporting now to fill their time since they've lost their 6PM duties? Or it's now just less airtime for them?

Itā€™s interesting to speculate on what preceded this move. Has KITVā€™s consultants decided that Akana is showing signs of age and can no longer attract younger viewers? Or could it be a move to placate and retain Pamela Young, who may have been wooed by KGMB as a replacement for Kim Gennaula? The plot thickens...

I like it. Gary and Pam have great on-camera rapport. Pam is the kind of woman who sees humor in so much, and often laughs at herself. To me, this is an indication that experience and appeal are as important to viewers as the message of news itself. As a person who gets AARP solicitations with more frequency these days, I have to say YAY for seasoned experienced news teams with good chemistry. Don't deny it, embrace it.

I wonder what else will shake out at KITV and the other stations.

I don't understand this move at all. For years Shawn has been groomed as KITV's weapon to one day take down Joe Moore. While KITV ratings aren't that great, Ching has that key 18 to 35 year old female demographic wrapped around his finger or so I've been told. Then again that was before Keahi was at KGMB.

Good for Gary and Pam though, I'm a big fan of pets on the set and anytime Pam sits down to grind food in other countries.

Wow, first Kim leaving now this. What's next?

My speculative answer to this is that perhaps Shawn Ching may leave the station and pursue his law career? Didn't he graduate out of law school not so long ago. This adjustment to his on-air schedule could probably prompt an exit from the airwaves.

Makes sense Mel. If he's not coming into work until later in the evening he could spend his days clerking for a judge or working for a law firm, gaining the experience he needs to become a full-fledged lawyer. I doubt he's done that sort of work-related experience yet because of the demands of being the 6 p.m. anchor.

Shawn graduated from law school in 2003, and is already a member of the bar.
He also is the author of the 26-page article "Restoring Justiceā€ that was featured in Volume 7 of the 2003 Hawaii Bar Journal.
He is already a very capable attorney, who also has a Masters in political science.

A couple years ago, he was working with attorney Lowell K.Y. Chun-Hoon (of King, Nakamura & Chun-Hoon), doing labor and employment law, but I don't know if that's still the case. He may not have time to practice at present.

Wow, had no idea he had already gained some legal experience already. Talk about making the most of your day. I can't believe he did all that and anchored the news five days a week.

And I also think he was out for a spell because his momma was sick. So not only is he a work horse, he's a very good son.

Still get a chuckle considering Shawn was once an Offensive lineman for UH, and though slimmed down from his playing days, still is a big guy, but on set is dwarfed by Kekaula.

Meh. You don't have to be THAT big to be one of the o-line.

As for Kekaula, been wondering when he's going to be a yokozuna.
