  • Lava Caves on Maui?

Aloha! The three of us are visiting in August (Maui, Kauai, Oahu), and my husband's boss mentioned something to him about lava caves on Maui. I am terribly, terribly claustrophobic, so I don't know if I could do it , but I know for a fact that my husband and 21-yr-old son would LOVE it. After all--while they go spelunking around there, I could always be out spurring on the economy (as in shopping!! HA!). Can anyone give me any advice on how to look up information on this? Is there just one location, or several? (we've never been to Maui) Mahalo in advance for any advice anyone might be able to give us!

It really is not as claustrophobic as it may seem...the tubes I have been threw were actually really big. But, there is no escaping the fact you are closed in, with only two directions to go. On the other hand, how often in your life do you get to go to one? Might be worth you doing it so you have a great story to tell.

This is so cool. I had no idea it existed. Decades ago I was on a film crew that shot inside a very deep and very large cavern in the Black Hills of South Dakota...one half mile in and down, schlepping equipment thru some openings with only a one foot radius. Once inside, the cavern was huge; not claustrophobic at all. The stalactites and stalagmites were amazing. What an incredible experience. HawaiiMama, give it a try...just have a glass of wine at the entrance or carry a flask with you!

Now, THAT is a suggestion I can definitely live with!!! I am planning to do this--I did some of the slot canyons in Arizona, and did pretty well. There were a couple of times I had to stand back and take a deep breath, but everyone just figured I was taking photos (which I was), so no one knew, and I made it thru fine--and I'm so glad I did; what an awesome experience. I'm gonna do it!!!!!!!!!! Aloha!
