  • Weight Watchers

Is anyone else on this program? It is a diet but also a lifestyle. It has taught me that I was over eating before and I dont need to over eat. Its all about portion sizes and making the healthy choice.

I joined back in April 2006, lost 20 lbs and then a teribble accident happened in may of 06 and my husbands cousin passed away and I tried my hardest but if I didnt eat more and more grandma would get on my muli about it! So I resulted that I gained 11 back but Im back on it again, lost 6 lbs so far in about a month. Not as fast as last time, I lost 10 lbs the first month.

I just wanted to know.. maybe I can get support from someone that may live near when I get home.. that would be actually fun to be honest..

    anyone?

    Re: Weight Watchers..

I would stay away from any diet plan that cost money...other than the normal cost of food.
Exercise and diet play an equal role in a weight reduction.
Exersise is important during calorie deficits to help maintain lean body mass muscle. More muscle=high metabolism=burning more fat. Also important are the cardiovascular benifits.

I wouldn't focus on rapid weightloss ....but more steady gradule weight reduction. Depending on your level of bodyfat....and history?
Just as you said..."it's a lifestyle". It has to be a change you are willing make. You should be in it for the long run.
Becareful not to "over diet" as this will slow down your metabolism...and you will store more calories as fat. This often happens to people who ever do it.

There is tons of information online .....just don't fall for "fad" diets. Common sense and portion control should be used.

      Re: Weight Watchers..

I was off of it for more than 3 months, after we came back up here in WA, and I realized that I couldnt do it without having something to follow. I tried the portion control which I was doing good and managing what I ate but it wasnt working the way I wanted it. I know rapid weight loss is not good for you. When you track your weight and you have lost more than 2 pds a week it alerts you and gives you advice. It has taught me not to over eat and it works for me and I will stay on it. I dont believe its a fad diet because there are people that have been on it for years and years. If it takes 6 months to loose what I need to, then hey thats ok. I am not turning to those products either, those slimming crap that you see at walmart I know that stuff is not good for you.

I do exercise also, there is a limit as to what type of exercise I can do, it cant be anything that will cause me to breathe hard, which is depending on my body because I have asthma that will kick in to a certain extent.

I notice when it does slow my metabolism down, I eat a few points over one day and the next I hit my maximum and do that for a week and then I start to loose weight again the rate I was before. I hope you dont think Im trying to argue but this program has taught me healthy choices rather than what Ive been doing before. I told myself to stop after the 3 months was up because I figured I could do it but in reality I just couldnt. Sounds pathetic but its my preference. And I am in it for the long run, like I said if its going to take 6 months to even a year to get down to what I need to I will.

      Thanks for replying..

          Re: Weight Watchers

I was on Weight Watchers and appreciate a lot of the skills it gave me, particularly:
          -what portions really mean
-the relationship between fiber and calories, and then fat relative to the fiber/cals.

But what WW didn't give me was the need to balance Weight-Watching with weight-training. I was 230lbs when I started, and a size 22W. Today I am 210lbs, but a size 14/16. I got there by getting into a gym and making weight-training a part of my life. My silhouette is innately about strength (hearty kanaka blood; 5'8" and one beeeg hourglass), so while I do get on the treadmill (haaate it), I lift weights and circuit-traing 5x/week and follow bodybuilding advice. I count my gains as much by the increase in strength and tape measure as I do the scale.

Goodbye Slimfast and WW snacks. Good morning, creatine and whey.

Change the composition and fill in the skin with marbled muscle, and you end up feeling better about yourself. I know I do.

            Re: Weight Watchers..

Ecntrc, you don't have to defend WW or that you are going to use it to help you lose weight and change the way you eat. Stick with WW/Wendie Plan - it's what you know and you know it works. I don't personally do the program - but my mom did (lost 50lbs in the late 80s and has kept it off), my two best friends from college did (they both lost 35lbs and have kept it off - one of them moved on to Body For Life and is on the inside cover of one of their books), and my former editor did (he lost 115lbs and is almost unrecognizable). I hope you find a buddy and I wish you the best!

We've discussed this WW cookbook before on HT and I personally like it. It's got some great stuff in it.

              Re: Weight Watchers

I lost 30 lbs on Weight Watchers back in 1985. It took me a long time to gain back but I did.

I went on it again last year and lost about 15 lbs, and gained about 10 of it back. (Those damn Hawaii trips !!!)

The bottom line is, like you said, it is a lifestyle choice, and requires discipline. In my opinion it is the ONLY "Diet" to be on. Educates you on eating by teaching you how about portions, and makes you conscious of EVERYTHING you put in in your mouth in the course of a day. Alot of people like me who have food issues eat "unconcsiously" and that's a big problem.

Weight Watchers teaches you how to discipline yourself, how to get through those hungry times the right way, and best of all, you can eat pretty much anything you want, as long as you eat the right amount.

Thanx for reminding me that I have to start going back to meetings again.

I recommend WW for anyone serious about losing weight, and changing their eating habits.

So, my morning triple espresso with half and half and equal : : 2 points

I think today is when I'll get back on program.

              Thanx!

Good for you Pua'i. One thing I did this year (check the "goals for 2007" thread) was get a bicycle. I HAAATE the treadmill too, so I get my cardio from bike riding. So much more fun. I'm sure theres nothing better than a morning bike ride in Hawaii.

If your gym is not too far away, you can get your cardio by riding your bike to the gym.

I go to the gym too, but find that working out makes me extra hungry, so now I have to get back on the WW program too. The comination of all 3 is really a best case scenario for me, anyway.

How much does this all cost? Like in dollars and cents. Monthly? Yearly?

HMSA has a great program with WW, if they are your insurance provider. The link is worth clicking on to see what WW fees normally are, compared to joining through HMSA.

                      Re: Weight Watchers

                      Adding some more...

the best elements about WW, aside from teaching about food portions and understanding labels, is the support group feature and the accountability of jumping on a scale in front of another human being. For many like myself, this latter point was a no-way-nuh-uh-heeelllll-no concern. However, doing so is a subtle yet powerful mental tool and I have learned to embrace it.

Another thing about those support groups. It was difficult for me at first. I am not a support groupy person. Nor do I consider myself to be an emotional eater, or binge during stress. My eating habits are more of the werewolf variety (smell meat, eyes turn red, roar in hunger, and pound flesh until the moon passes, then return to human again). I experienced a bit of a disconnect with some of the gals who sit there and plug the value of "free soup". And the most exercise that any of them got was going to Curves, and when I would talk about lifting weights, I always heard fears of "bulking up/getting big". Puh-leeze.

That said, I still cannot tout highly enough the food journalling, menu-reading and apportioned eating habits as taught through WW.

WW has a signup fee of about $30 or so, then it's $12 a meeting. Once you reach your goal weight, you become a lifetime member, and as long as you maintain your goal, meetings and weigh-ins are free for life.

They give you 2 books when you sign up, one with point counts for all normal grocery item food, then another for dining out/fast food.

For instance...those yummy and disgusting Jack in the Box tacos are 6 points each. Depending on your current weight, youre allowed 20-25 points per day, and a certain amount of bonus points per week. So you can use your points on whatever food you want, so long as you keep it within your point allowance.

So, if you choose to use your points on Pizza, go ahead, but keep in mind that Pizza has a high point count...

                        That's the "flex" program.

There is also a "Core" program which allows you to eat as much of certain "core" foods as it takes to make you full. These are mostlly whole foods...meat, fish, veggies, and stuff like fast food and the like are not even in that program.

I do the "flex" program, cos I like eating whatever I like food-wise.

                        The key is the portion.

You can borrow the books from a friend if you don't feel like paying, but the key to Weight Watchers really WORKING is going to the meetings every week, weighing in and keeping track of your weight loss (or gain) in pounds and doing the meetings for learning and support.

It's a lifetyle change for sure, but it DOES work if you go through the regimen.

Hey ladies thanks. Yeah it is discipline, My friend warned me you will be hungry the first week.. and I was but I was amazed that my stomach shrank, for example.. I could pound a full plate lunch and be full.. after being on WW for a couple months and then coming back home I could only eat 1/4. I got so many compliments on how much weight Ive lost, I gained 75lbs with my son, I went from a 110 to 195 the night I gave birth. It was crazy because I didnt eat and eat and eat while I was PG. He was extra big though and now hes a little samoan filipino, so I dont know.

But Anyways, I wanted to go to the meetings but I didnt want to pay. But Ive heard that they are real good to attend. I pay 65$ for the first 3 months and then about 16 - 17 a month after that.

I also hate treadmills. I hate the gym period because its boring to me. Ill go to just go because I know in any diet you need to add exercise. I love swimming laps, I started for 2 weeks up here and I got a sinus infection and then I lost my voice and I finally feel better today.. I get bored quick on exercise machines. I want to play some raquet ball or kick boxing or something. I cant wait to get home and start dancing hula again. Thats a work out and a half. I would always leave practice sweating mean kine.

Im on the flex plan and havent chose or thought about going on the core plan. I want to actually stay on the flex plan. I dont visit FF places anymore, I do love taco bell but Id rather have fresh veggies and fresh sandwiches or soup. I think I will check out the WW meetings. I also have stopped drinking which will add points also.

Thanks again ladies.. we can keep this going if anybody wants. I always like talking about loosing weight. yay! i lost another pound since last week monday. 5 lbs total in a month.. it was better last year, 10lbs in a month but hey its something..
